Where can you find the most beautiful Christmas markets in France?
As December approaches, some French towns undergo a complete transformation. Façades are lit up, squares are filled with wooden chalets, and the scents of cinnamon, gingerbread and mulled wine accompany strolls through the streets.
But if there is one region where the magic of Christmas takes on a truly exceptional dimension, it is undoubtedly Alsace and eastern France.
Strasbourg, Colmar, Kaysersberg, Riquewihr, Eguisheim… These names immediately bring to mind decorated half-timbered houses, illuminated villages and Alsatian traditions. Further west, Nancy and Metz offer a different take on the festive season, combining architectural heritage with the traditions of Saint Nicholas. Montbéliard rounds off this itinerary beautifully with its famous Christmas lights.
Whether for a group trip or a luxury tour, this part of France offers a particularly successful combination: heritage, gastronomy, traditions, crafts and landscapes.
Here are the stops we recommend for a tour of the most beautiful Christmas markets in France.
Strasbourg: one of France’s most iconic Christmas markets
Strasbourg is a must-visit destination.
The tradition of its Christmas market dates back several centuries and has earned it an international reputation today. During Advent, the historic centre is transformed: illuminated streets, decorated façades, traditional chalets and a huge Christmas tree create a spectacular setting.
The majestic Notre-Dame Cathedral, Petite France, Place Kléber and the half-timbered houses lend Strasbourg a particularly elegant atmosphere as night falls.
Why choose Strasbourg for a group trip?
Because Strasbourg is about more than just its Christmas market.
For a senior or high-end clientele, we recommend making it a genuine cultural experience: a private guided tour of the historic centre, a visit to the cathedral and Petite France, lunch at a selected restaurant, followed by free time to enjoy the markets and the illuminations.
Our advice: don’t try to see everything in just a few hours. A full day, or even two nights’ stay, allows you to explore Strasbourg in far better conditions.
Colmar: the magic of Christmas in a picture-postcard setting
If one had to choose a town to represent Christmas in Alsace, Colmar would certainly be among the first.
Colourful half-timbered houses, canals, historic little squares and elegant decorations lend the town centre an almost surreal atmosphere during the festive season.
Unlike a single market, Colmar offers several markets spread throughout the historic centre. This layout allows you to explore the town gradually, moving from one square to the next.
Little Venice, the Tanners’ Quarter, the Koïfhus and the Place des Dominicains are among the places not to be missed.
A destination particularly suited to luxury travel
Colmar makes it easy to combine culture, fine dining and wine tasting.
A lovely day might begin with a guided tour of the historic centre, followed by a gourmet lunch and a tasting of Alsatian wines, before returning to the centre as the lights begin to twinkle.
For groups of senior citizens, we recommend allowing plenty of time for breaks and opting for a sit-down lunch rather than an overly packed itinerary.
Kaysersberg: an authentic Christmas market in the heart of Alsace
Situated near Colmar, Kaysersberg offers a more intimate experience.
Its architecture, historic houses, church and the ruins of its castle create a remarkable setting. At Christmas, the village takes on a warm and welcoming atmosphere, where crafts and traditions play a prominent role.
Kaysersberg is particularly appealing to travellers wishing to discover a more authentic side of Alsace after visiting the major markets in Strasbourg and Colmar.
Our recommended experience
Combine a visit to the village with a wine tasting at a vineyard.
In winter, stepping into an Alsatian wine cellar, meeting a winemaker and discovering the region’s wines before heading to see the village’s Christmas lights creates a far more memorable experience than simply visiting one market after another.
Riquewihr: Christmas on the Alsace Wine Route
Surrounded by vineyards, Riquewihr is one of the most iconic villages on the Wine Route.
Its ramparts, half-timbered houses and ancient alleyways provide a remarkable backdrop all year round. During the Christmas period, illuminations and decorations further enhance its charm.
Riquewihr combines perfectly with Kaysersberg as part of a day trip from Colmar.
For a high-end or senior clientele, however, we prioritise quality over quantity: two villages visited at a leisurely pace are better than four stops rushed through.
A day trip to Kaysersberg – including a gourmet lunch and wine tasting – followed by a visit to Riquewihr, for example, strikes a very fine balance.
When is the best time to visit the Christmas markets in France?
The main Christmas market season generally begins in the second half of November and continues until Christmas, or even until the end of December in some places.
For a group trip, the first fortnight of December is often a particularly good time to visit.
Where possible, we also recommend opting for weekdays to avoid some of the weekend crowds.
Finally, good planning should allow for two different experiences: cultural visits during the day and the markets once night falls and the lights reveal their full magic.
